Homemade jelly beans. Try to make them and you will never buy gummies in the store again!

Oct 19, 2022

Everyone knows and loves them. Most of us are introduced to jelly beans in early childhood, instantly fall in love, and retain a fondness for these sweet treats throughout our lives. We're told by everyone that they're healthier than other sweets and worth eating. Nothing could be further from the truth. Store-bought jelly beans are anything but healthy, and we'll soon prove to you that they should be avoided like the plague.

What's so special about ready-made jellies?

Store-bought jelly beans are practically a Mendeleev's table. They're swarming with various E1s and artificial colors. Unfortunately, beautiful colors don't come from natural ingredients. Quinone Yellow E104, already banned in Norway, Finland, and the USA, is particularly dangerous. It can cause allergic reactions and be carcinogenic, as is Cochineal Red E124. This ingredient, in turn, burdens the liver and kidneys, reduces fertility, and may also be carcinogenic. Acidity regulators like tartrazine E102 and brilliant blue E133 also have a negative impact on our health.

Artificial colors and additives are one thing, but store-bought jelly beans also contain animal gelatin, which is made from animal waste: cartilage, bones, and skin fragments. Nutritionists have been battling the jelly bean phenomenon for years, further emphasizing that they contain a lot of sugar and have no nutritional value. 100g of jelly beans contains a whopping 12 teaspoons of sugar, or about 300 kcal. A serving of French fries, three slices of wheat bread, or a slice of cake provide the same amount of energy.

Store-bought jelly beans – why it's better to avoid them

Frequent snacking on jelly beans is a sure path to tooth decay, excess weight, and, later in life, atherosclerosis and obesity. Sugar is an excellent breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. Dietitians emphasize that the problems with concentration, hyperactivity, and difficulty controlling emotions, so common in schools and preschools, also stem from an unhealthy diet. Overeating jelly beans is especially dangerous for children, because their low body weight means that all the dangerous substances accumulate more easily in their bodies. Store-bought jelly beans are certainly not conducive to a healthy diet that supports physical and mental development.
Fortunately, you don't have to give them up completely. You can make them at home. Not only will they be healthier, but if you make them straight away with a double portion of ingredients, they'll keep longer. The little bags in which store-bought jelly beans are packaged disappear in the blink of an eye. The sweet taste and candy-like scent of these jelly candies make it impossible to stop eating them. You can make as many jelly candies at home as you want and then just snack on them without worrying about your health.

Healthy homemade jellies

Homemade jelly beans are much healthier. Just find a healthy alternative to gelatin and replace artificial colors with real juice. Instead of sugar, use syrup or one of the lower-calorie sugar substitutes (e.g., xylitol ).
Instead of gelatin, our homemade jellies use agar-agar, a healthy gelling agent derived from algae. We've replaced artificial colors with fruit, making our jellies full of vitamins and minerals. The natural sugar from the fruit gives them enough sweetness, so there's no need for additional sweeteners.
