What is xylitol

Xylitol is an organic chemical compound, five-carbon polyhydroxy alcohol, also known as sugar alcohol. Xylitol is a white, crystalline substance that looks and tastes like traditional sugar.

In nature it occurs, among others. in berries, mushrooms, corn cobs and hardwood. Acquired by scientists at the end of the 19th century. It began to be very popular only after 1940.

It is practically insulin independent. It undergoes changes in the body with little involvement. It does not ferment in the digestive tract. Recommended for diabetics.

How is xylitol different from traditional sugar?

It is over 40% less caloric than sugar, and also has 75% less carbohydrates than sugar. Very slowly processed and absorbed by our body. Almost 30% of xylitol is absorbed by the liver, the rest is broken down in the digestive tract and excreted.
