The fact is, we consume a lot of sugar, starting from a young age. Most of us can't imagine a day without sweets or many food products that manufacturers add sugar to. Sometimes we don't even know how much sugar we're actually consuming daily.
How much sugar do we really eat?
The average calorie requirement for women is approximately 2,000 kcal per day, slightly more for men. No more than 10% should come from sugar. This equates to approximately 50 g of sugar for women and 65 g of sugar for men. Converted to food, this equates to 100 g of jelly beans and 600 ml of Coca-Cola. Unfortunately, the sugar we consciously consume in the form of sweets and beverages is not the only amount we consume throughout the day. Sugar is also hidden in products that, at first glance, we might not suspect it, such as ketchup, sauces, and ready-made meals. There are also jams, yogurts, and cakes. Anyone who cares about their weight and health should limit their consumption of white sugar as much as possible. Why? It has long been known that excess sugar is harmful and causes not only weight problems but also many other diseases – for example, it is one of the factors contributing to cardiovascular disease.
What is erythritol (erythritol)?
Erythritol is a healthy and significantly lower-calorie sugar substitute. 100g of erythritol contains just 20 kcal, while 100g of commonly used sugar contains a whopping 405 kcal. The difference is significant.
What exactly is this substance? Erythritol is a sugar alcohol, known as a food additive and marked on packaging with the symbol E 968. It occurs naturally in small amounts in fruit, mushrooms, beer, and soy cheese. It is produced by the fermentation of natural plant sugars with the help of a special strain of yeast. It appears as white crystals and is deceptively similar to... sugar. It differs from sugar in taste – when consumed in its pure form, it leaves a slight cooling sensation on the tongue. However, this characteristic is completely imperceptible when added to food.
Its value lies primarily in the fact that it doesn't have the same destructive effects on our bodies as sugar, and it even has many health benefits. These include:
- It is not digested by the body and has no effect on the glycemic index, so it can be consumed by diabetics.
- It is the only sugar alcohol that does not affect the intestinal bacterial flora and does not cause a laxative effect.
- Erythritol is also a common additive to chewing gum because it does not cause tooth decay.
- It has an antioxidant effect – it slows down the body’s aging processes and has a positive effect on our immunity.
Important note: Its sweetening power is approximately 70% of regular sugar. When using erythritol in recipes, maintain a ratio of 120 to 140 g of erythritol per 100 g of sugar.
What instead of sugar?
