Sugar substitutes wanted! White sugar has not had a good reputation lately. It is considered the main culprit in the obesity and insulin resistance epidemic. It is addictive and associated with an unhealthy diet. So what can you replace it with so that you don't have to give up the sweet taste?

Is white sugar harmful?

White sugar crystals can be found in almost every home. We add them to tea, sweet pastries and desserts, as well as to homemade preserves. And maybe there would be nothing wrong with that, if not for the fact that it is not the only source of sugar in our diet. By eating cereals, sweets or drinking juices, we significantly exceed the limit of its daily consumption. And it is from the excess calories that weight problems arise, which affect an increasing group of people, including children.

So if we approach the subject rationally and reach for sugar substitutes, it will be good for our health. Which sweeteners deserve attention?

Cane sugar

It has the form of small crystals. It tastes similar to traditional sugar, but is healthier and more delicate. It can be added to drinks and sweet baked goods.

Cane sugar has been known for centuries, and was first used by the inhabitants of New Guinea. It reached Europe in the 4th century BC. Although it was never a cheap product, it quickly became a commonly used sweetener.

We especially recommend organic cane sugar, which is completely natural and does not contain any artificial additives.

Coconut sugar

It is made by boiling the juice of coconut palm buds. The brighter the crystals, the better, because the delicate taste and aroma of sugar are preserved.

Coconut sugar has fewer calories than traditional sugar. It also has many valuable ingredients, including potassium, magnesium, iron and B vitamins. It is a valuable source of dietary fiber.

In the right amount it is recommended for diabetics, because it does not cause large fluctuations in glucose concentration. It can be used in baking and drinks. It is sometimes used as a sprinkle for confectionery.

If you are familiar with the idea of zero waste, you can buy coconut sugar in a glass jar at Ekogram. You will receive an ecological and good quality product in an environmentally friendly package.

Birch sugar (Finnish xylitol)

Xylitol is one of the most popular sugar substitutes. It has fewer calories than white crystals and fewer carbohydrates. It is recommended for diabetics because it does not cause a sudden increase in blood sugar levels.

It is very efficient. It is used in small amounts and also reduces the feeling of hunger. Additionally, it has health-promoting properties: it limits the growth of mold and yeast in the digestive tract. It also has a beneficial effect on the condition of the oral cavity: it increases the production of saliva, strengthens the enamel and inhibits the action of bacteria responsible for caries.

Erythritol

Erythritol is another sugar substitute that can be used by diabetics and people on a weight loss diet (it has a zero glycemic index). It contains few calories, but its sweet taste improves the taste of tea, coffee and baked goods.

Or maybe syrup?

Sugar is not just crystals. Liquid products also have a sweet taste, the most popular of which in Poland is honey. You can also choose from: agave syrup , tapioca syrup, maple syrup and date syrup .

Remember that sugar substitutes, although healthier than traditional sugar, should also be used with caution.
