Organic food is produced in accordance with the principles of organic farming and production. The guarantee that the product is reliable is a certificate. The standards and regulations for organic food are the same throughout the European Union.
How to recognize organic food?
To recognize organic food, first of all look for the characteristic eco-leaf logo on the product. This mark can only be used by certified producers. After the eco-leaf mark there is a series of characters. In the case of Ekogram products, it is PL-EKO-03. This is the mark of the certification body that checks every year whether we operate in accordance with the regulations concerning organic food and awards us a certificate. Below the mark of the body there is information about the origin of the ingredients, e.g. PL Agriculture, EU Agriculture, Non-EU Agriculture, EU Agriculture / Non-EU Agriculture.
What does the organic food certificate guarantee?
This document guarantees that the entire production of organic food, from seed to store shelf, was carried out in accordance with the principles of organic farming and processing. The most important of them are:
- Prohibition of the use of artificial fertilizers and synthetic pesticides (natural plant protection products are used - their list is closed and is part of the regulations on organic farming)
- Resignation from the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
- Taking care of animal welfare (adequate space, access to fresh air, prohibition of the use of hormones)
- Taking care of soil quality (using crop rotation)
Organic farming. Legal basis
The principles of operation of farmers, processors and distributors of organic food who use organic farming methods are regulated by European Union legislation, specifically: Regulation (EU) 2018/848 on organic production and labeling of organic products. In order to introduce an organic product to the market, appropriate certificates must be obtained, which allow it to be marked as a 'product of organic farming'. The standards for organic food are the same in all EU countries. In Poland, this is guaranteed by the Organic Farming Act of 23 June 2022.
Where to buy organic food?
Nowadays it is not so difficult. Organic products with an eco certificate can be easily found in retail chains (not only grocery stores, but also drugstores, for example), traditional stores (there are often special shelves). Organic products are often identified with healthy food, which attracts an increasing number of conscious consumers. Specialist stores have a very wide range of organic products, and in recent years the sale of organic food via the Internet has been dynamically increasing.
