Twelve ingredients and nothing else. That's what real harissa tastes like 🙂
What is harissa?
Harissa is a spicy seasoning from the Maghreb, especially Tunisia, where it is one of the most important spices in the cuisine. Traditionally, it is a paste made from ground chili peppers, garlic and spices. Our version is dry, so you can decide whether to make a paste, a marinade or simply sprinkle it over a dish. It also retains its aroma for longer and does not need to be stored in the refrigerator.
How to use harissa
It is spicy, so start with a pinch. A quarter to half a teaspoon is enough for a dish serving 2–4 people. Taste it and add more only if you like. Remember that the blend already contains salt, so add more carefully.
- Quick marinade. Mix the harissa with olive oil, e.g. 1 teaspoon of harissa to 2–3 tablespoons of olive oil. Rub it over chicken or vegetables and roast. It works wonderfully with sweet potatoes, cauliflower, carrots, peppers and chickpeas.
- Harissa paste. Pour a little olive oil and a few drops of lemon juice over the blend, mix and leave for 10 minutes to allow the spices to release their aroma. This paste is perfect for sandwiches, burgers and wraps.
- Hummus. Mix a pinch of harissa into hummus or sprinkle it over hummus drizzled with olive oil.
- Yogurt sauce. Plain or Greek yogurt, a pinch of harissa, garlic and lemon juice make a quick dip for falafel, baked potatoes and grilled meats.
- Shakshuka. Add the harissa to the tomato sauce before cracking in the eggs. It will add depth and a pleasant warmth.
- Soups and couscous. A pinch of harissa will brighten up lentil soup, tomato soup, vegetable stew and couscous.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place. After each use, close the jar tightly and use a dry spoon to scoop out the seasoning. The blend contains salt, which absorbs moisture, so do not sprinkle it directly over a steaming pot, as the steam may enter the jar and cause the seasoning to clump.
Organic certification – good for you and the planet
Our harissa is an organic farming product with the PL-EKO-03 certificate. All plant-based ingredients come from certified organic farms, cultivated without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Sea salt is the only exception.
A fun fact about harissa
The name harissa comes from an Arabic verb meaning "to pound" or "to crush", as the chili peppers were traditionally pounded in a mortar. In Tunisia, harissa is much more than a seasoning: in 2022, UNESCO added it to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. That is THE REAL HARISSA.
