Hemp - why should it appear in your kitchen?

Oct 19, 2022

Amid the media frenzy surrounding cannabis (cannabis indica), no one seems to have noticed that its cousin, hemp, is experiencing a resurgence. Products made from it are incredibly healthy, delicious, and have nothing in common with cannabis, which is used as a stimulant. Here are 4 products you simply must know!

Hemp was once widely used—not only in the textile industry but also in our grandmothers' kitchens. It's been known for over 8,000 years. Nowadays, reputable health food stores are offering a growing number of hemp-based products. It turns out they're exceptionally healthy and provide essential nutrients. It's surprising that only 600 hectares of hemp are planted in Poland.

Hemp oil for health

We've written extensively about hemp oil. It's an exceptionally rich product, a rich source of unsaturated fatty acids. Scientists emphasize that it has an ideal ratio of 3:1 omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. Why is this so important? Primarily because this ratio influences lipid metabolism in our bodies.
It's also important to remember that these substances support the functioning of many key systems, including the nervous, cardiovascular, and immune systems. Furthermore, hemp oil—available in our stores —is also rich in vitamins A, C, E, and B vitamins.
It's no coincidence that this is such a popular oil. It enhances the flavor of many dishes with its nutty flavor. Hemp oil, however, isn't suitable for frying , but can be used as an ingredient in salad dressings and cocktails, for example. It's also a valued cosmetic – used instead of cream – it doesn't leave a greasy residue, restores skin radiance, and helps reduce imperfections.

Time for tea!

And not just any tea, of course, because it's made from hemp leaves. This tea provides many vitamins, including B and E – and vitamin E , as we know, is an antioxidant. Additionally, hemp leaves are rich in:

  • calcium
  • iron
  • zinc
  • phosphorus,
  • potassium
  • magnesium
  • sodium.

Thanks to this composition, hemp tea—available here—stimulates our immune system and boosts energy. It's also worth noting that it's an invaluable remedy for indigestion.

How to brew hemp tea?

Hemp tea has a mild and distinctive sweet flavor. Simply pour water at approximately 80 degrees Celsius over 1-2 teaspoons of hemp leaves and steep, covered, for about 5 minutes.

Healthy grain

Hemp seeds—you can find them here —contain the same substances as the oil made from them. Furthermore, they are a source of easily digestible plant protein—significantly better than that derived from soy. It's worth knowing that these tiny seeds also contain a rare form of omega-6 fatty acid, namely gamma-linolenic acid. Thanks to this , they support our metabolism and positively impact the condition of our skin, hair, and nails . They also boost energy and aid muscle recovery after exercise—which is why they are so sought after by athletes.

We especially recommend those made with muesli and hemp seeds. To make them, you'll need the following ingredients:

  • 2 cups of oatmeal
  • ½ cup of almonds (flakes are fine)
  • approx. 250 g dried dates
  • 2 tablespoons of peanut butter
  • 5 tablespoons of honey
  • 2 teaspoons of shelled hemp seeds
  • Selected seeds and fruits (flax, sunflower, raisins, cranberries)

Execution:

Toast the flakes, seeds, and almonds in a dry pan and let them cool. Crush the dates in a blender and add the toasted seeds and flakes. Heat the honey and peanut butter in a saucepan and mix with the mixture. Transfer everything to a parchment-lined baking sheet and, once cooled, cut into smaller pieces (bars).

The best protein

Did you know that hemp protein is considered a superfood? It's no wonder – just look at its properties. It turns out that hemp is the best source of highly digestible plant protein. Its seeds contain 20 essential amino acids, 10 of which are essential for muscle recovery. This makes it an ideal product for athletes.
Moreover, hemp protein—available here— (made from the paste formed after separating the oil from the seeds and drying them) should be included in everyone's diet—not just those on a meatless diet. It's a wealth of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 and omega-6 unsaturated fatty acids (in the right proportions). You can find it here:

  • zinc
  • phosphorus,
  • iron
  • vitamin E

This healthy powder doesn't alter the flavor of dishes, which makes it versatile. It can be added to yogurt, pancakes, muesli, salads, sprinkled on sandwiches, or added to all kinds of baked goods.

What should you remember?

First and foremost, it's about labeling. In stores, it's worth looking for hemp products marked "BIO "—that way, you can be sure the product was produced from the highest quality raw materials from certified, organic farms. And after all, we strive for the highest quality products!
