Buckwheat Groats in a Loose Form: How to Cook - The Easiest Way

Buckwheat groats taste best when cooked loosely. See how to cook buckwheat groats so that they are loose every time. This is the easiest way to cook buckwheat groats.

Recipe for loose buckwheat groats

This method will allow you to prepare one glass of unroasted (white) buckwheat groats in a loose form. You can use buckwheat groats prepared in this way instead of oatmeal for breakfast, as an addition to dinner. It also tastes great with vegetables, mushrooms or your favorite sauce.

Ingredients

Water ratio

1:1.5 - this means that for 1 cup of buckwheat groats you will need 1.5 cups of water. It is most convenient to measure full cups and use 2 cups of groats and 3 cups of water. You can use a small glass for this, e.g. one for espresso.

NOTE: We add the groats only to boiling water, below is a step-by-step recipe. Groats cooked loosely have a better taste and looseness than groats cooked in bags.

Step 1

Rinse the buckwheat in a strainer under cold running water to remove excess starch.

Step 2

In a pot with a lid, bring water to a boil. When the water boils, add a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of clarified butter (for a vegetarian version, it can be olive or sunflower oil), which helps to achieve a loose consistency of the groats.

Step 3

Add the groats to the boiling water and stir until the water boils again. Reduce the heat to half, put on a lid and set the timer for 5 minutes. Do not stir or lift the lid during this time. Roasted buckwheat requires a slightly shorter cooking time than unroasted buckwheat.

Step 4

After cooking, set the pot with the groats aside for at least 15 minutes (preferably 20 minutes). Still do not lift the lid or stir during this time. Groats prepared in this way will be loose, tasty and creamy in taste.

How to prevent overcooking of groats?

Overcooked and mushy buckwheat groats are not necessarily a bad thing. This version is often used for small children or on the recommendation of a doctor. To get overcooked buckwheat groats, add more water in the first step. You can use 2 cups of water instead of 1.5 cups for every 1 cup of groats. You can extend the cooking time to 7 minutes. White buckwheat groats have a more delicate flavor and are ideal for various dishes.

How to store and reheat groats?

Cooked buckwheat groats can be stored in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed container for up to 3 days. The groats can also be frozen and stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.

The best taste is when the groats are heated in a pan with butter under a cover. You can also heat the groats in the microwave. Start with 30 seconds and repeat until the desired temperature is achieved. Roasted buckwheat groats have an intense, nutty aroma that is retained even after storage.
