Eggs are a very important part of our diet, and in this post, you'll learn how to choose the best eggs and how to read their labels.
What is the number on an egg?
Every egg has a number printed on it. By the number on an egg, we can check what type of farming it comes from. The first digit is responsible for this. The numbers you might encounter are 3, 2, 1, and 0. Next, we have the country of origin – PL means Poland. The last digits indicate the farm's identification number (voivodeship, district code, activity range code, and company code). The size, or more precisely, the weight category of the eggs, is found on the packaging. It can have designations: S (small - below 53g), M (medium - from 53g to 63g), L (large - from 63g to 73g), XL (extra-large - above 73g). However, the weight category says nothing about the quality of the eggs.
Eggs labeled with number 3
Eggs labeled with number 3 are from caged hens. Such hens spend all day in small cages and have limited access to daylight. They live in very cramped conditions, simply put, poor conditions.
Remember that GMOs are not forbidden in animal feed. Hens from cage systems are often fed genetically modified meal. It can also be used in barn and free-range systems.
Eggs labeled with number 2
Eggs labeled with number 2 are from barn-raised hens. Here, the hens already have access to litter and slightly better conditions; they don't live in cages but are still confined and have limited access to daylight. Eggs with number 2 are a slightly better choice than eggs with number 3, but we can still choose better ones for ourselves.
Eggs labeled with number 1
Eggs labeled with number 1 are from free-range hens. These eggs are becoming increasingly popular, and that's a good thing. Here, the hens go outside and have access to daylight. Even so, you can still find better eggs :)
Eggs labeled with number 0
Eggs labeled with number 0 are organic eggs. They can be considered the best. In this case, we are certain that no GMO feed was used for the hens. If you care about the controlled origin of the feed, this will be the most reliable choice. Just pay a few extra zlotys per package, and you get a proven, safe product.
