Sesame is one of the oldest oil plants in the world. In Poland, he appeared in Sarmatian times, meaning much earlier than popular chocolate. Despite the long presence on our tables, the beneficial effect of sesame seeds on our health is definitely undervalued. Let's check what properties this plant contains and how it can be used.
Sesame was originally grown in Africa, from where it came to India, and then to other countries of the tropical zone. Depending on the variety, seeds of white, black or brown can be found. The way of eating sesame seeds depending on the part of the world is interesting. Africa enjoys roasted sesame, in the East it is a delicacy also eaten sweet, for example in halva called Turkish honey, as well as in the form of hummus or popular sesame paste. On the other hand, in the Korean cuisine, sesame leaves are eagerly eaten. They are added to traditional, local dishes. In Japan it is common to use salt with the addition of sesame seeds.
As a curiosity it is worth noting that the famous saying "Sesame open" has a direct reference to the properties of this plant. The sound that comes with breaking the seeds is like the sound of opening the door lock.
Sesame and its properties
Sesame seeds are quite caloric (100 g to 572 kcal) and are distinguished by a large content of unsaturated fatty acids and oleic acids. We will also find here a lot of protein that is just as valuable as egg white. The content of calcium sesame can successfully compete with cow's milk and yellow cheese. 100 g of sesame seeds contains as much as 1160 mg of calcium (for comparison, only 118 mg are found in the same portion of cow's milk, and about 600 mg of yellow cheese).
Characteristic for sesame is also a large content of selenium, which affects the proper metabolism and functioning of the immune system. Selenium is the trace element that our body can obtain only from food.
In sesame seeds, we can also find other valuable minerals such as iron, magnesium, vitamin B and E, as well as phytosterols. They are responsible for lowering the level of bad cholesterol, which leads to heart disease and atherosclerosis. In turn, the high content of lecithin promotes concentration and regulation of brain work. Due to the high content of zinc, sesame is a very valuable product in the prevention of prostate disease. It is worth to permanently include in the diet of men raw sesame seeds (http://drpelc.pl/pestki-nasiona-ziarna/359-bio-sezam-nieluskany-ekologiczny-250g-ekogram-szielonki.html?search_query=sezam&results=9) . It is also worth trying also tahini, or sesame paste, from which hummus is prepared. Sesame. How to eat it?
If we want to reach for sesame products, the easiest way is to recommend sesame oil (http://drpelc.pl/oleje/281-bio-olej-sezamowy-virgin-ekologiczny-500ml-ekogram-szielonki.html?search_query=sezam&results = 9). It can be used for salads and baking. It very well enriches the taste of Japanese, Chinese and Arabic dishes. Sesame oil should be stored in a cool dark place, preferably in a refrigerator, otherwise it rots quickly.
The same principle applies to grains. After opening the original packaging, it is best to put them in a tightly closed can and put them in a dry, cool place, away from light. Sesame grains blend well with sweet and dry dishes. They enrich the taste of dishes from meat, pasta, fish, fresh vegetables and salads. You can make them batter or just sprinkle a ready dish. Sweet desserts give crunchiness. Sesame seeds are good to be served on a hot pan without fat to bring out their delicate, nutty flavor. Grains are ready when they start to bounce slightly in the pan.
What is worth trying? Very tasty and easy to prepare is, for example, an omelette with sesame sprinkles, salmon in sesame breadcrumbs with vegetables, fish in a curry sauce with the addition of sesame seeds. For sweet you can recommend a chocolate cream with sesame sprinkles, sesame pancakes, or crumble with apples and sesame seeds. We do not need to convince anyone to bagels, bagels and pretzels with sesame sprinkles. In some bakeries you can also find sesame croisants.
Nutritionists agree that sesame seeds should be included in the diet. One teaspoon of seeds is a daily, tasty portion of health and energy.
