Food salt is a difficult topic. This spice gives the dishes taste, and in addition provides many valuable minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, zinc and manganese. Nutrition specialists, however, have been warning for years: we eat far too much salt. As if that was not enough, then on the market there were more, in theory, healthier types of spices. So what salt to choose? What salt is the healthiest? After the answer, I invite you to the article.

Salt and health

Rock salt is used in the food industry. It is cheap and has preservative properties - for this reason, the producers add it in large quantities not only to ready-made dishes, but also to products such as sausages, cheese, sometimes sweets and bread. That is why salt intake is growing from year to year. WHO is alarmed that it would be optimal to consume about 5 g of salt a day. This is the amount of one tea spoon. Too large amounts can lead to problems with the heart, kidneys and circulatory system. How, then, considering the excessively exceeded norms and at the same time its health action, reduce salt intake?

The key is to eliminate highly processed products. In addition, it is worth experimenting with herbs and other spices that give the dishes a taste. They can be garlic, ginger, turmeric, pepper or lemon juice. Then, not exceeding 5 g of salt a day should not be a problem.

Kitchen salt - use

Do you not eat processed food and make sure that your basket contains healthy, fresh and organic products? It is not necessary to completely eliminate salt added to meals in your case. Remember that salt is especially useful for people who practice. In addition, remember that it can be used for other purposes than improving the taste of dishes.

Let's return to salting the dishes: what salt to choose? Which salt is the healthiest and will provide you with the most nutrients?

What salt is the best?

We distinguish many different varieties of salt: stone, sea, black, Himalayan, iodinated, non-iodized and from the Dead Sea. In addition, the packaging has "iodized" and "non-iodized" inscriptions. Which of them will be the healthiest one?

Iodized and non-iodized salt

You will find various types of table salt on the market. Iodized salt is because in some regions it was impossible to deliver iodine in water or food even in small quantities. The un-hydrated salt, in turn, will prove useful in the production of home-made preserves. This is the type of salt we recommend because it is the least processed.

Rock salt and sea salt

Rock salt was formed a long time ago - then the planet was mostly covered by the sea. Thanks to the warming of the climate and the evaporation of waters, the salt crystallized and, as a result, its deposits were created. Technically, therefore, it is a sea salt, obtained from a stone formed long before humans started walking on the ground.

In turn, sea salt, which can be bought in stores under this name, is obtained from salt water on a regular basis. A healthy proposition of this variety will be Nigari sea salt, which is a side effect of the formation of classical sea salt. In 95% it consists of magnesium chloride. You can read more about this topic in the Nigari article - a spice you need to learn about. Nigari sea salt also gives the dishes an unusual taste.

Kitchen salt, which most Poles have in their homes, is purified salt and additionally enriched with iodine and special substances that prevent it from clumping. It is therefore a highly processed product that does not contain a large amount of other minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, zinc or manganese. So choose its healthier versions - unpurified salts that do not contain unnecessary amplifiers.

Kłodawa salt

The Kłodawa salt comes from the mines in Kłodawa. It is a healthy, Polish salt that does not contain anti-caking agents and is not purified, and in addition is not transported to us from distant countries. It is a rock salt, therefore it has the same properties (largely composed of sodium). Depending on the concentration of minerals it can be from gray through pink to blue. It is worth remembering - the colored coding salt does not have to contain enhancers to give it a beautiful shade! So you do not have to be afraid of its color.

Himalayan salt

Himalayan salt has recently been breaking records of popularity - it is not cleaned and does not contain unnecessary additives. In addition, it has a beautiful, pink or gray color. The properties and application of Himalayan salt are the same as that of untreated rock salt - and both products can not be replanted in quantity. For frequent salting of dishes, we consume mainly sodium, which in excessive amounts has a negative impact on health.

Kala Namak salt (black salt) - properties

Kala Namak black salt is used in both Polish and Oriental cuisine. It is also perfect as an addition to all dishes of vegan cuisine. Contrary to appearances, it does not have a black color - it assumes colors from dirty pink to violet. Kala Namak salt also contains large amounts of iron. It also has a characteristic, egg-like aroma that gives the dishes a distinctive, unusual taste.

Salt from the Dead Sea

Salt from the Dead Sea is mainly used in cosmetics. It can help in the treatment of acne, cellulite or psoriasis. It is the salt most often added to cosmetics all over the world. Such sea salt has interesting properties because it contains:

  • magnesium
  • calcium

What salt to choose?

So which salt to choose? A lot depends on your taste preferences. Each salt should be used sparingly, interchangeably with such additives as organic spices or herbs. It's hard to say exactly what salt will be best for you, because all of them mainly contain iodine, excess salt promotes the formation of many dangerous diseases. However, if you use it in small amounts, it is worth choosing salt because of the taste.
