Erythritol, also known as erythritol, is considered a healthy sugar substitute. This product is popular not only among users, but also the trust of doctors who have been warning against the effects of excessive sugar consumption for years. What exactly is this substance, how is it made and how to use it? In this post, you will find the answers to all these questions.
The fact is that we eat a lot of sugar from an early age. Most of us cannot imagine a day without sweets or many food products to which producers add sugar. Sometimes we don't even know how much sugar we actually deliver to our body every day.

How much sugar do we really eat?

The average caloric requirement for women is about 2,000 kcal per day, for men slightly more. There should be no more than 10% of sugar. This is equivalent to about 50 g of sugar for women and 65 g of sugar for men. In terms of food, it is 100 g of jelly beans and 600 ml of Coca-Cola. Unfortunately, the sugar that we consciously consume in the form of sweets and in drinks is not the only amount delivered during the day. Sugar is also hidden in products that at first glance we do not suspect their content at all, e.g. ketchup, sauces, ready meals. There are also jams, yoghurts and cakes. Whoever cares about weight and health should limit the consumption of white sugar as much as possible. Why? It has been known for a long time that its excess is harmful and causes not only weight problems, but also many other diseases - for example, it is one of the factors determining diseases of the cardiovascular system.

What is erythritol (erythritol)?

Erythritol is a healthy and much less caloric sugar substitute. 100 g of erythritol contains only 20 kcal, while the commonly used sugar in 100 g has as much as 405 kcal. So the difference is significant.
What exactly is this substance? Erytrol belongs to the so-called sugar alcohols, it is known as a food additive and is marked with the symbol E 968 on the packaging. It occurs naturally in small amounts in fruit, mushrooms, beer or soy cheese. It is produced in the process of fermentation of natural plant sugar, with the participation of a special strain of yeast. It has the form of white crystals and resembles ... sugar. It differs from it in taste - when consumed in its pure form, it leaves a slight feeling of coldness on the tongue. However, this feature is completely imperceptible after adding it to dishes.
Its value is primarily the fact that it does not have such a destructive effect on our body as sugar, and even has many health benefits. Here they are:

  • It is not digested by the body and has no effect on the glycemic index, so it can be consumed by diabetics.
  • As the only one from the group of sugar alcohols, it does not affect the intestinal flora and does not have a laxative effect.
  • Erythritol is also a common additive to chewing gums because it does not cause cavities.
  • It has an antioxidant effect - it slows down the aging process of the body and has a positive effect on our immunity.

Important note: Its sweetening capacity is approx. 70% of regular sugar. When using erythritol in recipes, the following proportions should be kept: 120 to 140 g of erythritol per 100 g of sugar.

What instead of sugar?

This question is asked by more and more people who want to eat healthily. We have already devoted some attention to this issue in the text - What to replace white sugar with? . In addition to erythritol and xylitol, there are a few more products that can replace sugar. Syrups, eg agave syrup, are becoming more and more popular in this area - see what it can be used for . They have approx. 3 times less calories, and also contain minerals and vitamins. They are available in various flavors, so they not only sweeten, but also give the prepared dishes an interesting aroma. Worth recommending are e.g. maple syrup, coconut syrup, sugar beet syrup or corn syrup.
Tasty and healthy sugar substitutes are a great way to stay in accordance with doctors' recommendations and not to give up your preferences (how many of us cannot imagine morning coffee or tea without sugar?). Erythritol and syrups are an excellent, less caloric and much healthier alternative to traditional sugar. And when it comes to health, it's not worth risking ...
